Grit, Guns, and Guidance: A Mother’s Day Interview with Sonya

Clear Ballistics

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the women who raise and protect the next generation—with strength, purpose, and precision.

At Clear Ballistics, we know that preparation starts at home. For Sydney, our marketing manager, that lesson came from one of her earliest role models—her mom, Sonya. A former law enforcement officer, a registered nurse, and the owner of Keowee Defense Group, Sonya has spent years equipping others with the skills and mindset needed to protect themselves and those they love.

But before she was a firearms instructor, she was a mom. And before she taught students on the range, she was teaching lessons in resilience and readiness at home.

“I’ve always had a strong sense of service,” Sonya shared. “Nursing and law enforcement gave me a way to act on that. But over time, I realized that people outside of the job needed this kind of training too. That’s why I started Keowee Defense Group—to make it accessible.”

Sonya’s approach to self-defense is rooted in clarity and confidence. That’s where Clear Ballistics fits in.

“It’s one thing to talk about shot placement,” she said. “It’s another thing to see it. Clear Ballistics gel allows me to visually show what happens on impact. It builds confidence and understanding in a way nothing else can.”

Seeing the power of a bullet through Clear Ballistics gel isn’t just educational—it’s ethical. “It makes it real,” Sonya said. “When students can visualize what happens inside the body, they take that responsibility seriously. It starts important conversations—about training, about mindset, and about what it really means to be prepared.”

For Sonya, teaching people how to protect themselves is more than technical training—it’s empowerment. And that mindset has deeply shaped her daughter, Sydney, who now helps tell those stories through her work in marketing.

“You’ve always taught me to be capable, to be prepared, and not to be afraid of being strong,” Sydney said during their conversation. “Even growing up, I saw that strength doesn’t have to look a certain way. You showed me that.”

That’s a message Sonya hopes more women, and especially moms, take to heart.

“Moms are protectors by nature. But we’re also teachers. We raise the next generation, and that includes passing on the skills and mindset to be prepared and responsible,” she said.

And Sonya is far from alone.

According to 2024 data, nearly 1 in 4 women in the U.S. now owns a firearm, totaling approximately 42 million female gun owners—a 13% increase since 2022. The primary reason? Personal protection, cited by over 90% of female gun owners (Legal Reader).

She also added, “A lot of women don’t realize this space is for them, too. But representation matters. When they see other moms or women stepping onto the range or running training sessions, it opens the door. It says, ‘You belong here.’”

So if another mom is considering getting into training?

“Start small. Ask questions. Find a trainer who respects you and supports your growth. You don’t have to be tactical overnight—but you do have the right to be capable,” she said.

As we honor all the mothers out there—whether they’re raising shooters, training new students, or just setting an example—we’re reminded of the kind of strength that doesn’t always make headlines. The quiet, steady strength of women who lead by example.

And sometimes, that strength is wearing a plate carrier and carrying a training gel block.

“Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there,” Sonya said. “Especially the ones on the range.”

This Mother’s Day, Clear Ballistics salutes the women who know that strength and care aren’t opposites—they’re two sides of preparedness. We’re proud to support the mothers who shoot, train, and raise the next generation with purpose.
